If Harper is serious about Reconciliation then these funds must be reinstated immediately. As a Crisis/Support Life Skills Counsellor at the only Aboriginal (VAW) shelter in Toronto as well as an Intergenerational Survivor of the attempted genocide of our people,I know it will take many years and much more Healing for us to regain and re-claim the strength necessary to move forward. The Government spends billions of dollars on Foreign aid and services for Immigrants while our people live on reserves in third world conditions. Perhaps this money would be better spent on clean drinking water, employment, medical services, schools and recreation facilities. The shelter in Montreal needs the funding to help families who come to Urban areas adjust to City life and support them in a familiar, Cultural environment.
The Residential schools deeply damaged our abilities to parent, due to the forceful separation and purposeful division of siblings.
I am furious that the Government would even consider cutting this vital funding! Charity should begin at home. And this is our home. And we need to have our languages returned to us. The languages should be taught in school. And as far as the argument… if the children learned their language, who would they go home and speak their language to?…… How about setting up ABORIGINAL AS A FIRST LANGUAGE classes!!!
